Lions Owner William Clay Ford Has Died
(3/9 12:59 PT)

The Facts:
Longtime Detroit Lions owner William Clay Ford has died, according to the team. He was 88. "It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of Mr. Ford and extend our deepest sympathies to Mrs. Ford and to the entire Ford family," Lions president Tom Lewand said in a statement released through the team. "No owner loved his team more than Mr. Ford loved the Lions." Reported by MLive.com

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Ford joined the Lions as president in 1961, and bought the team in 1963 for the modest sum of $6 million. He celebrated his 50th year of ownership last November. He was an active owner throughout much of his tenure, but ceded much of the day-to-day operations over the past few years to Bill Ford Jr., his son and the team's vice chairman. Ford Jr. is expected to control the Lions, at least in the near-term. The new league year -- including free agency -- begins Tuesday.
