The Jets have released WR Santonio Holmes, the team announced.

The move wasn expected. It saves the team from taking a $10.75M salary cap hit. Given Holmes’ struggles to perform at a high level in the four seasons since arriving in New York, it makes sense for both sides to move on. Limited to only four games in 2012 due to a foot injury that lingered into 2013, Holmes’ best year with the Jets came in 2011, when he started every game but generated only 654 receiving yards. Previous reporting has suggested the llist of possible landing spots includes St. Louis, Arizona and Pittsburgh -- although Holmes' history with the Steelers and with Rams OC Brian Schottenheimer make those two seem like a reach. ... Nonetheless, Holmes will draw interest now that he's available.
