GM Wants New Deal For Colin Kaepernick Before Training Camp
(3/25 2:40 PT)

The Facts:
Following up on the ongoing story. ... Kaepernick is scheduled to earn about half the salary of 49ers backup Blaine Gabbert this season. GM Trent Baalke said Tuesday that the club’s goal is to work out a new contract for Kaepernick before the opening of training camp in late-July. “We’re going to work extremely hard, very diligently in trying to get something done prior to training camp. That’s the objective right now, as it stands,” Baalke said Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings. Reported by CSNBayArea.com

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Team president Paraag Marathe has held preliminary contract negotiations with agent Scott Smith, who represents Kaepernick. The sides have spoken only in general terms but are expected to soon delve into specifics with face-to-face meetings, Baalke said. Kaepernick is entering the final year of his original four-year contract. He is scheduled to earn $1.073 million in base pay and bonuses. Meanwhile, Gabbert, whom the 49ers acquired in a trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars two weeks ago, will make a guaranteed $2.011 million. “The priority is Colin Kaepernick is a San Francisco 49er for however long we can have him be a San Francisco 49er,” HC Jim Harbaugh said on Monday. “It’s definitely a high priority.” Baalke's comments lend further credence to that notion.
