The Facts:
Dayne has the early lead to become the 1A ball carrier, with Tatum Bell remaining in his 1B role. Then again, Dayne is entering his seventh NFL season and has yet to establish himself as a No. 1 back. "I don't think anybody knows until he actually does it," Mike Shanahan conceded. "We'll see through the preseason, see how he handles the offseason, what type of shape he's in."

Of course, Bell has yet to prove himself, either. As Post staffer Bill Williamson suggested, Bell's career stats tell the story: In carries 1 through 10, he is averaging 5.8 yards (1,088 yards on 188 attempts), but just 3.8 yards in carries 11-20 (229 yards on 60 attempts). ... In other words, look for more sharing of carries in Denver this fall.
