Head coach Marty Schottenheimer has said he'll probably announce his starting quarterback early next week.

Schottenheimer appeared to tip his hand in Thursday night's exhibition win over the Niners when he did not give rookie Philip Rivers any reps with the first team. ... Instead, incumbent Drew Brees took all the snaps with the No. 1 offense, turning in a statistically perfect evening by finishing 5-of-5 passing for 71 yards with one touchdown and no turnovers. ... Asked afterward if he has done enough to win the starting job for the Sept. 12 opener at Houston, Brees said: "Yes, I feel that way. ..."
