Regarding the need for selecting a TE in the third round -- David Thomas -- with Graham and Benjamin Watson already on the roster, Bill Belichick explained that the Patriots run a two-tight end offense and the team needs three players on the roster to do so.

Also, according to Globe staffer Mike Reiss, Graham is coming off routine shoulder surgery this offseason and his contract expires following the 2006 season. So since any tight end picked would be essentially projected for the game-day 45-man roster (the Patriots regularly dress three tight ends for games), Reiss believes that explains the need for another tight end.
