According to NFL Network insider Adam Schefter, the Chiefs, still awaiting word on Holmes' medical status, could open the season with the veteran halfback on the "physically unable to perform" list -- even if his medical status has yet to resolved. Schefter added that Holmes is scheduled for further medical testing in late June or early July.

If the Chiefs take that route, Holmes -- should he receive full medical clearance (he suffered a season-ending neck injury last October), would have a three-week window starting a day after the team's sixth regular-season game and ending the day after their ninth regular-season game. ...
