Jones worked with the second team Friday behind 2005 first-round draft pick Cedric Benson. "We have a starting rotation," Lovie Smith said. "In order to be at the top of the starting rotation, you have to be here. So that's how it is. Cedric's at the top of the starting rotation at running back."

Sounds suspiciously like the coach is sending Jones, who elected not to take part in the team's recent voluntary workouts, a message about participation. ... But don't assume the fact that Jones showed up for this mandatory mini-camp is an indication he wouldn't like to move on this summer. Asked about the apparent demotion, Jones told reporters, "I don't have anything to say at this time. ..." The real competition, of course, begins when training camp opens.
