One half of the 49ers' battered tailback tandem is back. Kevan Barlow has joined the team's non-contact practices in his first organized work with the 49ers since undergoing surgery in January to remove loose cartilage in his left knee.

Frank Gore, meanwhile, is expected to return in time for next month's training camp after separate off-season arthroscopic procedures to repair damage to both of his shoulders. ... Mike Nolan said he was encouraged by Barlow's return, though he remains concerned about his health. The coach also said he'll wait until training camp to determine the rotation at running back but Gore remains our favorite to hold down the starting job once the season begins.
