The Facts:
Mike Shanahan knows just the place Lelie could compete for the No. 1 job he covets so much that he's boycotting the Broncos' mini-camp: Denver. "If you want to compete to be the No. 1 guy, why not be here? Why not be here in camp?" Shanahan said Thursday after the Broncos began a mandatory three-day mini-camp. "If you're afraid of competing against a No. 1 guy who's 35 years old (in Rod Smith)? "I don't think you're going to find a better scenario than what he has here."

Despite the absence, Shanahan wouldn't dismiss the idea that Lelie could still assume that No. 1 role -- "He'd still have an opportunity here if he decided to come back," the head coach noted -- even as he questioned Lelie's protocol in pursuing that goal. ... Again, we can't help but wonder what Lelie has ever done to convince anybody he's truly No. 1 material. We also agree with Shanahan: It's hard to prove a point without being there to do so.
