The Facts:
Maybe it was a nod to Charlie Whitehurst's obvious talents. Maybe it was an admission that A.J. Feeley struggled a bit in off-season workouts. Or maybe it was one of the most ludicrous things Marty Schottenheimer has ever said. This after Schottenheimer declared yesterday that the competition to be the No. 2 quarterback is open.

According to Union-Tribune staffer Kevin Acee, all three explanations for such a statement have some merit. Whitehurst has skills. Feeley has not lit up the sky. And there is little to no chance Schottenheimer would make a rookie his backup quarterback. Still the coach seems to be a fan of Whitehurst. “He's got a natural instinct for decision-making and a quickness of release,” Schottenheimer said.
