McCarthy reportedly accepted an offer on a three-year contract from new 49ers head coach Mike Nolan late Wednesday night. An announcement is expected to be made today. Nolan interviewed McCarthy, 41, on Tuesday at the Senior Bowl. The top candidate to replace McCarthy in New Orleans is ex-Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach Marc Trestman. Saints quarterbacks coach Mike Sheppard also is a potential replacement.

McCarthy was a member of the original staff Jim Haslett assembled in New Orleans in 2000. During his tenure the Saints established numerous offensive records and had a 1,000-yard rusher each season. The Saints ranked 15th in total offense in 2004. McCarthy's unit ranked 10th in total offense in 2000 and 2001.
