The Facts:
This afternoon, the Chargers are expected to announce that they have "franchised" Brees, who in recent months has said repeatedly that he wants a long-term commitment from the team after helping it reach the playoffs and post a winning season for the first time in nine years.

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
A person close to Brees told the Union-Tribune yesterday that the Pro Bowl performer intends to sign the guaranteed one-year contract tender for $8.078 million as soon as he and his wife return from an Australian vacation. The Chargers would still have the option of trading Brees, 26, to make room for Philip Rivers, or keep Brees through the year and revisit the issue after the 2005 season -- which at this point, seems like the most likely scenario.
