The Cardinals maintained control on McCown's future this week by extending him a qualifying offer worth $1.43 million. That tender gives the team the right of first refusal should another team make McCown an offer. If the Cardinals declined to match, they would receive a first-round pick in return.

That is unlikely to happen, so it appears McCown will remain a Cardinals player for at least one more season. The Republic went on to note that head coach Dennis Green has professed faith in McCown, but the club has expressed interest in Jeff Garcia, recently cut by Cleveland, and likely will be interested if/when Tampa Bay releases Brad Johnson.
