The Facts:
Chargers president Dean Spanos announced Tuesday that has he decided that Marty Schottenheimer will lead the team in the 2007 season. Spanos stated he and GM A.J. Smith agree that Schottenheimer is the best person to lead the team.

The Chargers offered Schottenheimer a 1-year extension at $4.5 million -- with a $1 million buyout at the club's option, but the coach declined. He will, of course, serve out the remaining year of his current contract without the additional year tacked on. His return means another season of dealing with what might be best characterized as a contentious relationship with Smith.
