The Facts:
The Cowboys offered the head coaching job to Chargers DC Wade Phillips and began negotiations with the former head coach Thursday morning. ESPN's John Clayton reported that the sides reached an agreement, believed to be for three years and an option. Financial terms were not available. The team scheduled a news conference for 6 p.m. ET Thursday.

Although owner Jerry Jones appeared to be most interested in 49ers OC Norv Turner, Phillips -- one of 10 candidates interviewed for the opening -- emerged as the top choice for a variety of reasons. In choosing Phillips over Turner, Jones decided between coaches with extensive experience in the Cowboys' two areas of focus: quarterback and defense, and defense -- an area in which the team has invested heavily in recent years -- apparently won out.
