Dillon’s career with the Patriots should end some time today. The Pats are expected to release him before free agency begins at midnight tonight. The franchise record-holder for rushing yards in a season will then be free to negotiate with other teams in hopes of landing a job as a featured back.

By releasing him now, the Patriots will save more than $2 million. Dillon would count for $4.4 million against the salary cap if the team retains him. ... Though he has reserved retirement as an option, Dillon wants to spend another season as a featured back, something that wasn’t going to happen with the Pats, thanks to Laurence Maroney.
