Simms will take the first snap April 10 when the Bucs begin their first organized team activity. That's Jon Gruden's way of saying Simms and Jeff Garcia will have a level playing field to compete for the starting quarterback job. "We're going to let Chris Simms break the huddle on April 10," the coach said. "We're going to try to teach Jeff Garcia the offense and bring Bruce Gradkowski along."

But as Times staffer Rick Stroud stressed, Gruden longs to have the same starting quarterback for more than one season. He has had seven since he arrived in 2002. "You're on a new team every year when you change quarterbacks," he said. "It's no fun, really. You're not going to reach the real promised land in terms of all your efforts until you're two or three or four years into the relationship. ..." If that's the case, perhaps Simms has a legitimate shot at fending of Garcia's challenge for the top spot this summer.
