The Facts:
Lovie Smith was asked throughout the weekend's 10th annual fan convention if he was confident in Benson's ability to fill the role of the team's featured runner in the absence of Thomas Jones, who was traded to the New York Jets. "Thomas Jones did a lot for our ballclub," Smith said. "He was a great leader, good player. But we drafted Cedric Benson early, he showed a lot of promise last year, and we feel like it's his time to take the lead position."

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Smith went on to explain: "With the outstanding offensive line we have, we'll always be a running football team. We'll always have a great running back, and I think Cedric Benson is ready to really step up and be one of the better backs in the league. ..." Benson had 157 carries last season after getting just 67 as a rookie. In his final seven regular-season games, Benson averaged an impressive 4.7 yards per attempt.
