The Saints on Thursday released Carney. "John wanted to explore other opportunities that are available in the NFL," Saints GM Mickey Loomis said. "This is something we were sensitive to because he has been an important part of the Saints community during his time in New Orleans."

the previous item, the move was hardly a surprise after the Saints acquired kicker Olindo Mare from the Dolphins for a sixth-round pick on Tuesday. Carney requested the release and hopes to play for another team this year.
