The Facts:
Lovie Smith has made it clear what happens to players who pass on the voluntary offseason workout program, but he said there's no issue with Griese missing the first three weeks. The Bears have said Griese is tending to personal matters, including Judi's house, the charity endeavor he runs in Denver to assist grieving children. What they didn't say is that Griese underwent offseason surgery to repair a bone spur and couldn't do anything more than rehabilitation -- work that can be done anywhere.

Apparently, however, that has done little to quell rumors that Griese decided not to attend the workouts because he is not in competition for the starting job. "We've talked about the situation, and he asked," said OC Ron Turner, who didn't dismiss the notion that Griese might be unhappy. "I told him Rex [Grossman] was our starting quarterback. We're not going into it and saying, 'Yeah, it's an open competition and we're going to split the reps 50-50 in mini-camp and camp. ...'" Turner hopes to see Griese before the mandatory mini-camp May 18-20. Players are asked to be at Halas Hall four days a week.
