The Facts:
McCareins, who has a $2.9 million base salary this season, is a likely cap casualty. The Jets can designate him as a June 1 cut, which softens the immediate salary-cap hit, although there's a rule that allows them to make the move before June 1. They tried to trade him before the draft, but there wasn't much of a market because teams expect him to be released.

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
While McCareins' future in New York is clearly in question, New York Post staffer Mark Cannizzaro, citing two sources inside the organization, advised readers on Tuesday that the team still sees McCareins, who's only 28, as a value to the team. He is, after all, its best down-field threat, averaging 15.1 yards on 23 catches last season and 16.6 yards on 43 catches in 2005. And with Tim Dwight injury prone and coming off surgery and Brad Smith still considered a project, McCareins is the Jets' No. 3 receiver at the moment. Whether he makes it to -- or through -- training camp remains to be seen.
