Panthers Sign Steve Smith To 3-Year Extension
(5/8 8:57 PT)

The Facts:
The Panthers have signed Smith to a contract extension Tuesday. The extension is for three years and is believed to make Smith one of the NFL's highest-paid receivers and will keep him with the team through the 2012 season. Reported by the Charlotte Observer

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Smith, one of the league's top receivers, had been hoping to get a new deal for some time. And as Yahoo! Sports' Charles Robinson noted this morning, what might be most remarkable about Smith's new contract is that he never held out of mandatory workouts or publicly campaigned for a new deal. Agent Derrick Fox noted that Smith was adamant about keeping negotiations quiet, whereas other players at his position -- Javon Walker, Terrell Owens and Deion Branch -- forced trades or an outright release in order to get new pacts in different cities.
