Beverly , who began his pro career on the Lions practice squad in 1997 and became their starting center, agreed to terms on a one-year contract. In 2004, Beverly signed with Atlanta as a free agent. He was primarily a blocking specialist as a backup tight end. The Lions plan to use him as a tight end.

Beverly, 33, will fill a role as a blocker in short-yardage and goal-line situations. He will be the third veteran tight end on the depth chart, behind Dan Campbell and Casey FitzSimmons. The Lions' coaches also wanted to add Beverly for the leadership that he will bring to a young locker room.
