The Panthers have a new offensive coordinator, a new blocking scheme and a new set of plays and Shelton hopes all of that translates into a new beginning for him in the NFL. Still, it's a tough call on whether Shelton makes the roster this year; much could depend on how well he performs in training camp.

According to Gazette staffer Steve Reed, there's one other thing to consider: One of the reasons the team may be leery of cutting him is that he might go on to find success with another team. If they were to release him this year, there would probably be a decent chance the division rival Falcons might pick him up. Shelton's college coach at Louisville, Bobby Petrino, is now the Falcons head coach.
