It's a week before the Lions report to training camp, and the big question is whether Johnson will be in on time. The Lions and Johnson's agent, Bus Cook, are already talking. Chief operating officer Tom Lewand spoke to Cook twice Monday. "Our dialogue will continue daily until we get it done," Lewand said.

But, as Free Press staffer Nicholas J. Cotsonika suggests, it might not be that simple. Oakland did not sign No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell before the draft and negotiations reportedly are moving slowly. The Raiders report to camp two days after the Lions do. If Russell's negotiations drag on, Johnson's could, too. Cotsonika went on to speculate that Cook might want to wait for Russell to sign first and set the market. He could argue that his client deserves No. 1 money. Though Johnson was the No. 2 overall pick, he was widely considered the best player in the draft. ... Stay tuned.
