HC Wade Phillips went out of his way to mention that Owens lined up at X and Z (both outside receiver positions) and knew what he was doing during the opening practice. T.O. only lined up at X (split end) last season -- "for whatever reason," Phillips said.

According to Morning News staffer Tim MacMahon, Phillips read about Owens not knowing the plays last season, but he made sure to brag about how mentally prepared "The Player" is under the new regime. MacMahon went on to suggest Phillips might figure the best way to make sure T.O. keeps studying the playbook is to publicly praise him for doing so -- although throwing him the ball as often as possible might be a more effective method of keeping Owens in check.
