McCardell, a Houston native who played for San Diego last season, has agreed to a one-year contract with the Texans. He'll be paid $820,000 this season and got a $40,000 signing bonus. McCardell will sign his contract Friday morning and will be on the field when the Texans begin practicing.

McCardell said he had numerous offers and left some money on the table to sign with his hometown team -- which might explain why it took so long to make a final decision. "I'm really excited about playing with the Texans," McCardell said. "This just seem like a natural fit for me. ..." That natural fit might have as much to do with Houston's lack of quality receiving depth as it does with Houston being his home base.
