In a surprising development, the Falcons released Gibson on Saturday, just three days into training camp. HC Bobby Petrino said the impetus for cutting the former Georgia standout was a "football decision."

Gibson, who was signed as a free agent in February, had positioned himself to make the roster during off-season workouts but was told Saturday morning he was cut. ... This is the latest setback for Gibson in his quest to make it in the NFL. He was cut weeks after being drafted in the fourth round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2005. He spent the past two seasons on the Miami Dolphins' practice squad.
