The Facts:
Vinatieri signed his one-year franchise tender ($2.51 million) Tuesday. He still can sign a multi-year contract with the team, but that probably wouldn't come until after July 15. As the Patriots' franchise player, Vinatieri was guaranteed a 2005 contract of 120 percent over his 2004 salary.

Per the collective bargaining agreement, should New England re-sign Vinatieri before July 15, he would be designated the team's franchise player for the entirety of the contract. As important as that tag is, the Patriots are unlikely to forgo its future use unnecessarily.
