Unconfirmed reports said Smith would be out four to six weeks, but the official line won't be known until sometime today, after an MRI scan determines the degree of separation in his right shoulder.

"I don't know the full extent of the injury," Smith said in a statement. "I'll find out in the morning. Right now, it's a shoulder separation. It's frustrating. I came out here to win the game." According to Chronicle staffer John Crumpacker, it's a second-degree separation at the least, meaning surgery would probably not be required. A third-degree separation means surgery.
