The Facts:
The 49ers this morning are denying an ESPN report that Smith would opt for season-ending shoulder surgery if the initial diagnosis is confirmed by Dr. James Andrews. ESPN's Ed Werder cited a "team source." The ESPN report also stated that Smith tore both "tendons." Smith actually tore both ligaments. On Monday, he and the team said there was no plan for surgery.

"The only thing that's right is that we're sending the lab results to Dr. Andrews," 49ers director of public relations Aaron Salkin said. "I don't know who talked to him, but it wasn't right." Salkin said Smith is not scheduled to visit with Dr. Andrews, who will simply examine the lab results and offer his opinion.
