Holmes is expected to retire after suffering another neck injury Sunday and meeting with doctors this week. An announcement could come as early as Wednesday. One source familiar with the situation told NFL Network insider Adam Schefter Tuesday night: "He is retiring for sure. Noon press conference on Wednesday."

A Chiefs spokesman denied that and said that Holmes still is weighing his options, but HC Herman Edwards did tell reporters that Holmes was "dinged" up in Sunday's loss to the Colts. In addition to Schefter's report, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli is also suggesting retirement is imminent. Whatever the case, Kolby Smith will be the only healthy back on the roster when practice begins later today.
