The 49ers have hired former Rams head coach Mike Martz as offensive coordinator, agent Bob LaMont confirmed. LaMont represents both 49ers coach Mike Nolan and Martz. The NFL Network was the first to report the news.

Martz replaces overmatched predecessor Jim Hostler, who was tossed into the fray following Norv Turner's departure last offseason. ... Martz is known for his work with quarterbacks, so Alex Smith and Shaun Hill -- assuming he'll return -- could benefit along with potential playmakers Darrell Jackson and Vernon Davis. It remains to be seen, however, if Martz's stint in Detroit convinced him to focus sufficiently on the rushing attack to keep satisfy Frank Gore owners.
