The Facts:
The Chargers are holding out hope Gates will play Sunday against the Colts despite his dislocated left big toe. "I'm optimistic about the way he is coming along because he's optimistic," HC Norv Turner said yesterday. "He's making progress. He's going through all his treatments and all those things, and we'll see where he's at later in the week."

As Union-Tribune staffer Kevin Acee suggested, it seems unlikely Gates would be able to be effective even if he makes it onto the field. And of course, it does the Chargers no good to say Gates is out already. In other words: Don't get your hopes too high.
