Although the team has been suggesting his status against the Colts will be determined just before kickoff, there is no -- and should be no -- real expectation that will happen. In fact, some observers suggest Gates is unlikely to be ready this month. All that said -- regardless of whether he tries to play Sunday -- the Chargers are expected to keep Gates active in the hopes he can play in the AFC championship game or Super Bowl, if the team makes it that far.
