The Cowboys' 21-17 loss to the Giants on Sunday could be the Dolphins' gain. With the Cowboys' season coming to a crashing halt, the Dolphins' search for a head coach could also be over. League rules permit them to hire Dallas assistant head coach Tony Sparano immediately. The quicker the Dolphins hire a head coach, the quicker they could begin filling out the coaching staff so they can prepare for the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., the week after the conference championship games and the NFL Combine next month.

However, the Dolphins concluded an interview today with Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, 41. Schwartz told several local TV reporters that he had a nice visit with Dolphins officials, but declined to discuss further details. The Dolphins have already interviewed Sparano, Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and recently fired Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. Contrary to published reports, the Dolphins have not asked the Jaguars permission to interview assistant head coach Mike Tice. ... Stay tuned. A hiring should be imminent.
