The Facts:
Gates, who last year set an NFL record for tight ends with 13 touchdown catches, is seeking a long-term deal and the two sides are negotiating. He is the club's only veteran not under contract for the 2005 season. Others in his situation have been known to boycott offseason workouts. But Gates plans to be here throughout the next several weeks leading up to the June 10-12 mini-camp. "I'm more of a team guy," he said after Friday morning's workout.

As an exclusive rights free agent, Gates cannot negotiate with other teams and the Chargers can pay him as little as $380,000 for this season. ... The former basketball standout, who is recovering from arthroscopic shoulder surgery he had in March, said he was hopeful a deal could be worked out before the season. He added, however, if there is no deal, he said, there's "no telling what happens. ..." Stay tuned.
