The Atlanta Falcons today announced that Mike Smith has been named the team’s new head coach. The Falcons will formally introduce Smith at a press conference on Thursday at the team’s headquarters.

Smith, a 26-year coaching veteran, becomes the 14th head coach in Falcons history and takes over the Falcons after serving as the successful DC of the Jacksonville Jaguars for the past five seasons (2003-2007). He now faces the rather daunting task of rebuilding a Falcons franchise coming off a 4-12 season, sidetracked by quarterback Michael Vick's dogfighting saga, coach Bobby Petrino quitting after 13 games and an injury ravaged and aging roster.
