The Facts:
Ward, the fourth-year running back who missed the postseason after suffering a fractured fibula on Dec. 2 against the Bears, is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the start of next month. But the Giants are trying to prevent that from happening and have begun negotiations with Ward's agent, Peter Schaffer, according to someone familiar with the progress of the talks. It appears the two sides are talking about a contract that would be three or four years long.

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Ward rushed for 602 yards and three touchdowns on 125 carries (4.8 yards per attempt) while catching 26 passes for 179 yards and one receiving touchdown this season. His contributions helped fill the void when Brandon Jacobs suffered knee and hamstring injuries. But as the Star-Ledger report notes, Ward has had injuries of his own the past few years: Foot, ankle, groin and leg problems that have kept him out of 18 regular-season games the past three seasons. Ward's durability would seemingly be the only question about him if he hit the open market instead of re-signing with the Giants.
