The Facts:
The new 49ers OC walked over to the chalkboard in his office, grabbed a cloth and wiped the slate clean. That was Mike Martz's metaphor for how he will go about teaching quarterbacks Alex Smith and Shaun Hill the 49ers' fourth scheme in four seasons.

Fantasy Football Diehards Line:
Martz said he met with Smith last week and spoke recently by phone with Hill, who was re-signed to a three-year deal last Tuesday. Martz said Smith's turbulent season wasn't discussed during their meeting. "We didn't talk about last year -- he didn't, I didn't," Martz said. "I could care less about last year. It has no bearing on anything to me. It was, 'We're starting over and let's go. ...'" Martz said he and HC Mike Nolan have both made it clear that the quarterback competition will be "wide open. ..." For what it's worth, Smith claims he's fine with and looking forward to the competition.
