The Atlanta Falcons released four-time Pro Bowl tight end Alge Crumpler and six other players Friday in the first step of a major rebuilding job in the post-Michael Vick era. The Falcons also cut quarterback Byron Leftwich and wide receiver Jamin Elliott.

The moves come as no real surprise. New GM Thomas Dimitroff and HC Mike Smith are preparing to build the team in a manner fitting their needs and aging superstars -- especially those as willing to voice complaints as the oft-injured Crumpler was last year -- are clearly at the top of their list. ... And for what it's worth, more changes could be coming. Warrick Dunn, 33 and in the final year of his contract, counts $5 million against the salary cap. He might not be the proper fit for new offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey's scheme. ... Stay tuned.
