Is the sexy pick the correct pick?
By Isaac Cruz
It’s a mistake that plagues fantasy football owners. It can have you making desperate trade offers and nervously scanning the waiver wire for any value to bolster your team.
Wasting high draft picks on players with the ‘sexy’ name who fail to produce can cripple your team and ruin your season. This year the player to watch out for is Odell Beckham Jr. After finishing the 2016 season with 101 catches, 1,367 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns; coupled with him signing the largest ever shoe deal by an NFL player. Odell figures to be high on most draft boards, but using a high draft pick on him could be a mistake this year.
Selecting Ole Miss tight end Evan Engram with the 23rd overall pick and signing veteran wide receiver Brandon Marshall show the Giants are focused on upgrading the weapons around Eli Manning. Brandon Marshall is coming off a season where he racked up almost 800 yards and averaged 13.4 yards per catch. Sterling Shepard is set to see his role within the offense increase following a strong rookie season that saw him catch eight touchdowns. Evan Engram just finished his senior season at Ole Miss with 926 yards and eight touchdowns. With all of these targets at his disposal Manning will likely spread the ball around the field rather than force throws to Beckham, which is part of the reason he threw 16 interceptions last season.
Eli Manning now has weapons all over the field so while Beckham still may have a solid season, don’t expect 100 receptions (which are very valuable in PPR fantasy football leagues) and double digit touchdowns in 2017. If you’re looking for a potential sleeper pick at quarterback though, Eli Manning is a guy to consider.
