Current News Updates
9/01 According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, we shouldn't be surprised if wide receiver Jonathan Mingo is Bryce Young's favorite target. Graziano went on to explain one of the reasons the Panthers drafted Mingo, a 6-foot-1, 220-pound receiver out of Ole Miss, with the 39th pick in April's draft was because they believed he'd be a good fit with the quarterback they took with the first selection. Mingo is behind veterans DJ Chark and Adam Thielen on the depth chart at wide receiver, but there's opportunity for him to pass them early in the season if Young looks his way enough. In the Panthers' mind, Young and Mingo can grow together in their roles and form a strong connection for years to come. Mingo caught 51 passes for 861 yards and five TDs in his final college season.8/31 WR Laviska Shenault said Wednesday that he’s out of the concussion protocol and ready to go. 8/30 According to The Athletic's Joe Person, D.J. Chark says his injured hamstring feels good and he’s optimistic about Week 1. Chark has been sitting out since he was hurt on 8/23. In addition, Terrace Marshall Jr. has been out since the middle of August with a back issue. HC Frank Reich told reporters he knows all the injured WRs are doing everything they can to get back. 8/29 According to Adam Schefter, the Panthers have acquired wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette from the Chiefs in exchange for a swap of conditional 2025 seventh-rounders. 8/27 According to ESPN.com's David Newton, there are concerns at halfback in Carolina. The primary concern is health, as Miles Sanders has been out since early in training camp with a groin injury and Chuba Hubbard injured an ankle in the second preseason game. So there is uncertainty for the opener even though HC Frank Reich believes one or both will be ready. Reich also has the luxury of wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. being able to play running back in a Deebo Samuel-type role. That said, the injury situation that could open the door for power back Spencer Brown to make the final roster along with Raheem Blackshear. ... Meanwhile, health is a concern at wideout as well. With Terrace Marshall Jr. (back) and D.J Chark (hamstring) sidelined depth is an issue. If Chark can't play in the opener, Adam Thielen and the rookie Jonathan Mingo are the clear-cut starters. 8/26 Following up on the previous item. ... On Friday night, rookie quarterback Bryce Young scored his first NFL touchdown in the team's 26-17 loss to the Detroit Lions. HC Frank Reich was asked about Young’s performance. He was happy to see Young use his legs to move the chains, despite needing some work on sliding. "We've got to work on his sliding a little bit," Reich said. "But he has that in him, that instinct, that make you miss [ability], even when a guy has him dead to rights. We've seen that in practice, little snippets of that." Reich added, “I think he was sharp and productive and made plays. He showed even more playmaking ability with his feet. The throw for the touchdown. There was another throw to Adam Thielen, kind of a big box throw that Adam lost the ball in the lights that I think had a decent chance to be completed. But Adam lost the ball in the lights. So, I thought he was accurate and made plays.” 8/26 The multiple moves that will occur through Tuesday as teams begin trimming their rosters down to the 53-man limit are underway: The Panthers waived QB Jake Luton, RB Camerun Peoples, WRs Gary Jennings and CJ Saunders, T Larnel Coleman, DL Antwuan Jackson, LB Bumper Pool, S Collin Duncan and S Josh Thomas, CB Rejzohn Wright, and K Matthew Wright. 8/26 Bryce Young’s preseason is over and his next game action will come for real Sept. 10 against the Falcons. The No. 1 overall pick played two series in Friday night's loss to the Lions, completing his exhibition action. ... He led a 14-play, 52-yard field goal drive and a seven-play, 57-yard touchdown drive, giving the Panthers a 10-0 lead over Detroit. It was his first touchdown drive of the exhibition season, and he completed it with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Adam Thielen. Young played 11 snaps in the first preseason game and 21 in the second, leading the Panthers to a field goal in five drives. He played 20 on Thursday against the Lions, and it was the best he has played. He ended the night 7-of-12 for 73 yards and a touchdown and finished his three-game preseason 14-of-24 for 129 yards and a touchdown. Young also had 21 rushing yards on three carries Thursday. Thielen finished with four catches for 48 yards after shaking off an early back injury. Andy Dalton replaced Young with 12:23 left in the second quarter. He finished 6 of 11 for 60 yards and an interception in the end zone. Running back Miles Sanders missed his third straight preseason game while recovering from a groin injury, but is expected to be ready for Week 1, when Carolina opens regular season at Atlanta on Sept 10. ... You can access complete stats for preseason Week 3 via our exclusive Fantasy BoxScore. 8/22 Following up on the previous item. ... Miles Sanders was back in full pads at practice on Tuesday after dealing with a groin injury, and afterward he said he has no doubt he’ll play in the regular-season opener against the Falcons. “Absolutely. Absolutely,” Sanders said when asked if he’s going to play Week 1. Beyond that, Sanders said he wanted to push himself in practice and felt that he did so. “Just really run around, get tired, work through the tired,” Sanders said. “It was hot. One of our hottest days yesterday. So, tried to just get my legs back. ...” Sanders signed with the Panthers this offseason after a career-best year in Philadelphia last season, gaining 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns. As Profootballtalk.com suggests, Carolina would love to see him repeat that kind of production for a rebuilding offense with rookie quarterback Bryce Young. 8/23 According to Joe Person, Panthers WR D.J. Chark suffered a hamstring injury. Follow up reports suggest that the injury is not considered serious. 8/22 RB Miles Sanders, who has been dealing with a minor groin injury, says he "absolutely" will be ready for the regular-season opener. 8/22 The Panthers will kick off their third preseason game the same way they started the first two. QB Bryce Young and the rest of the team’s starters will be on the field to open their final exhibition contest of the summer. Young has attempted 12 passes through the first two weeks and head coach Frank Reich said on Monday that they “still want to get more reps” for the first team before the start of the regular season. As Profootballtalk.com notes, that approach appears to be just fine with Young. “This is by design,” Young said, via the team’s website. “I trust the coaches wholeheartedly in their approach, what they’re doing, the play-calling, everything. For me, I’ve never played in a preseason game. Like there’s scrimmages in high school, I guess, but I’ve never played a game [where] the starters aren’t playing as much as they can. Obviously, that’s part of the league. It’s just something that’s new for me to adjust to. But our coaching staff, they’ve been here for years. They’ve had a ton of success. I have all the respect in the world for them. They don’t wake up the day before the game and just try to figure it out. They have a reason. They have a plan. Whatever that is, I don’t question it. I just go in and try to execute.” Reich said the Panthers will “play it by ear” when it comes to how much Young and company will be playing as they try to ensure that they are ready to roll against the Falcons on September 11. 8/21 QB Bryce Young and the first-team offense will play in Friday's preseason finale versus the Lions, head coach Frank Reich announced. 8/21 K Eddy Pineiro (groin) is expected to be ready for the regular season and may attempt short field goal tries in Friday's preseason finale versus the Lions, per head coach Frank Reich. 8/21 RB Miles Sanders is making progress in his return to the lineup. Reporters at Panthers practice on Monday noted (via Profootballtalk.com) that Sanders was in full pads for the team’s session. Sanders has been sidelined by a groin injury and has not played in either of the team’s first two preseason games. HC Frank Reich said last week that Sanders might not play at all in the preseason. The Panthers close out the preseason at home against the Lions on Friday night. As PFT suggests, there should be more word on Sanders’ availability for that game as the week unfolds, but having him healthy for the start of the regular season will likely take precedence over any desire to get him some work before Week 1. 8/19 As ESPN.com's David Newton put it after Friday night's exhibition game against the Giants, "Rookie quarterback Bryce Young needs some help. ..." Newton went on to explain the youngster needs it from his offensive line, which for the second straight week allowed the No. 1 overall pick of the draft to take a couple of vicious hits (e.g., left tackle Ikem Ekwonu was beaten twice) and continued to make costly penalties (e.g., a hold on rookie right tackle Chandler Zavala negated a 15-yard, third-down catch). He needs it from his wide receivers, who continue to be sloppy with route running. Last week Laviska Shenault Jr. ran too deep on a third-down play. Rookie Jonathan Mingo stopped his route short Friday night on a third-down throw that should have been completed. The good news, according to Newton, is Young hasn't lost his cool or made costly mistakes. He completed 3 of 6 passes for 35 yards on two series (17 plays) and led a 15-play, 62-yard drive for a field goal. Progress, but those around Young aren't playing winning football. 8/18 Bryce Young took one step back out of the shotgun and quickly hit tight end Hayden Hurst, matched up against a New York Jets linebacker and safety, for an easy 5-yard gain. It was just a snapshot of Young’s performance from Saturday’s 27-0 preseason loss at Bank of America Stadium, but one that ESPN.com's David Newton believes you should remember as the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 draft enters the season. “We’re always matched up on linebackers and safeties," Hurst said. “That’s kind of a mismatch to begin with. With our size and our speed, we’re able to get open. And we’re his first line of sight. When you’re a rookie quarterback, you need to get the ball out fast, make plays and get up the field and get yards. So it helps a rookie quarterback out. ..." The tight end was almost nonexistent as a pass-catcher in the Carolina offense the past three seasons under coach Matt Rhule and interim coach Steve Wilks. The team ranked last in the NFL in receptions (122), receiving yards (1,173) and touchdowns (6) from the position during that stretch. Former NFL tight end Pete Metzelaars -- a teammate of Panthers coach Frank Reich with the Buffalo Bills and a tight ends coach with the San Diego Chargers when Reich was their offensive coordinator in 2014 and 2015 -- believes that’s about to change under Reich and will benefit Young. You saw that with Hurst's catch in Saturday’s preseason game. That’s a big part of Reich’s philosophy going back to his Buffalo days. “It’s a team game, but within the game there are these little matchups that you have to try to find and create and take advantage of,’’ Reich said. “One of those is at the tight end position. ..." History is on Reich’s side. He has coached four Pro Bowl tight ends as an offensive coordinator and head coach. Antonio Gates caught 69 passes for 821 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2014, Reich’s first season as the Chargers' offensive coordinator. Zach Ertz had 78 catches for 816 yards and four touchdowns in 2016 when Reich was the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. He followed that with 74 catches for 824 yards and eight touchdowns the next season, making the Pro Bowl for the first time and helping Philadelphia win Super Bowl LII. Eric Ebron had 66 catches for 750 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2018, Reich’s first season as Indianapolis Colts' head coach. The 13 touchdowns were two more than he had in his first four NFL seasons combined. Jack Doyle made the Pro Bowl under Reich the following season, catching 43 passes for 448 yards and four touchdowns despite sharing time with Ebron. Meanwhile, Young understands the necessity of having that security blanket, just as former Carolina quarterback Cam Newton did as a rookie in 2011 when the Panthers signed veteran tight end Jeremy Shockey and traded for Greg Olsen to help the No. 1 overall pick. Reich has created a similar situation for Young, signing Hurst to a three-year, $21.75 million deal in free agency to pair with Tommy Tremble and Ian Thomas. Hurst's best season was 2020, when he caught 56 passes for 571 yards and six touchdowns with the Atlanta Falcons. Tremble and Thomas are known more for their blocking. All three caught a pass against the Jets and accounted for 31 percent of the passing yards of Young and backup Matt Corral. It’s a weapon Metzelaars can’t wait to see develop at Carolina. “A tight end is vital to any quarterback,” he said. “I’m sure it will be for Frank’s." 8/17 FOX Sports Radio1340's Sheena Quick, citing a source, reports that Terrace Marshall Jr. is expected to miss a few weeks after having a full scan performed on his back. 8/16 Rookie QB Bryce Young will play in Friday's preseason game versus the Giants and it'll probably be about the same amount of reps/series he did last week against the Jets, head coach Frank Reich announced. Meanwhile, Andy Dalton (back) will probably be held out against the Giants, per Reich. As previously noted, RB Miles Sanders (groin) will likely not play this preseason but the injury is "getting better," per Reich. ... Finally: WR Damiere Byrd (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve. 8/16 According to Darin Gantt, No Miles Sanders this week. HC Frank Reich says there's a chance he doesn't play at all in the preseason. Remember: Sanders suffered what's considered a minor groin injury earlier this month. This seems like the Panthers being cautious. 8/15 According to NFL.com, Panthers backup QB Andy Dalton has missed practice with back tightness. 8/15 As NFL.com suggested, maybe it was simply the anomaly of facing a fierce Jets front, but Charlotte might have concerns about its blocking. Carolina had four projected starters in the lineup for Saturday's exhibition opener against the Jets -- Ikem Ekwonu, Brady Christensen, Bradley Bozeman and Taylor Moton -- yet still struggled against Gang Green backups. The quartet played all 11 snaps with rookie QB Bryce Young?, but the first-round pick got pummeled in his brief appearance. The blocking made the evaluation of the first-round pick moot. Young was hit three times, pressured relatedly, and sacked to end his day after three drives (one first down). The Carolina starting group couldn't generate any holes in the ground game either. The right guard spot is an issue with Austin Corbett currently on the physically unable to perform list. Things didn't improve as the game went on. Michael Jordan, who played guard and tackle, gave up a couple of sacks, including a strip from new Jet Bruce Hector?. The good news: Carolina has time to figure things out -- and it won't face this Jets front again. 8/14 The Carolina Panthers saw one of their wide receivers injured during Monday's practice session. Per multiple reports, Terrace Marshall Jr. left practice early on a cart. Afterwards, head coach Frank Reich said Marshall "tweaked a little something in his back," per Panthers.com Darin Gantt. As CBSSports.com notes, reporters did not see the play where Marshall was injured, but noted that he was transported via cart from the practice field. Marshall was a second-round pick of the Panthers in 2021 out of LSU. In 27 career games played, he has recorded 45 receptions for 628 yards and one touchdown. Marshall is seen as a player who is expected to take a major leap under Reich and his new staff. 8/10 According to Steve Reed of the Associated Press in Charlotte, coach Frank Reich says RB Miles Sanders injured his groin in practice yesterday and likely will not play vs Jets. 8/08 Panthers kicker Eddy Pineiro has a groin injury that could cost him some preseason time, so the team added a kicker to the roster Tuesday. Matthew Wright signed after a pre-practice workout, the team announced. Wright has kicked for the Chiefs, Steelers and Jaguars in his career, appearing in 23 games. He has never spent an entire season with one team. Wright is 40-for-46 on field goals and 35-of-37 on extra points. In 2022, he kicked in two games for the Chiefs and four for the Steelers. 8/08 Following Tuesday’s practice, head coach Frank Reich informed media (via Sheena Quick of FoxSports 1340) that wide receiver Damiere Byrd had sustained a “significant” hamstring injury. The eighth year receiver, on his second stint with the team, is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. “Damiere’s hamstring is pretty significant. It’s pretty significant,” said Reich. “It’s gonna be a while. Could require a procedure. So, we’re continuin’ to get him evaluated—which is a shame because he was lookin’ really good. Obviously, he’s put himself in good position, but this was an unfortunate injury.” Back in the Carolinas on a one-year deal, Byrd was one of the leading candidates for the punt return job. “It’s not season-ending, but it’s significant,” Reich added. 8/08 Since being drafted No. 1 overall in April, quarterback Bryce Young has continued to take the necessary steps forward on his way to taking control of the offense. He's been taking first-team snaps since organized team activities, and (as noted above) was officially named Carolina's starting QB at the start of training camp. But before he opens up the regular season versus the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 10, Young's next step in his preparation will be getting some preseason snaps. Speaking to reporters on Sunday (8/6), head coach Frank Reich said that Young would play in the team's preseason opener versus the Jets. Though he did not clarify how much time the rookie will see in his first appearance, he did say the coaches already have a general plan for how much overall time to give him in the preseason. While Young has impressed in practices so far, according to his teammates and coaches, this should offer him a lower-stakes chance to get some in-game reps before fully taking the reins in the regular season. It will also offer fans their first chance at seeing the Panthers' new franchise quarterback in action, albeit in a limited role. Reich did not commit to how many snaps or series the top pick of the 2023 NFL draft would get. "I do have an idea," Reich said. "There is flexibility in the plan. There has to be. That's just being smart about it. ..." The Panthers and Jets are set to face off on 8/12. 8/08 The Bryce Young era began with the No. 1 pick in this year's NFL Draft named the team's starting quarterback to open camp. As Fantasy Pros notes, Young is a pinpoint passer with a strong arm, quick release and the sort of field-reading ability that will endear him to head coach Frank Reich. Young is agile, but he isn't going to add a great deal of fantasy value with his legs. The biggest concern with Young is his small frame. He's listed at 5-10, 204, but he might play at under 200 pounds. The receiving corps is a bit questionable with Adam Thielen, D.J. Chark joining holdover Terrace Marshall Jr. and rookie Jonathan Mingo on the depth chart. It seems likely Miles Sanders will play a greater role as a receiver in Carolina than he did in recent seasons in Philly. It's possible he could duplicate his 50-catch rookie season.

Team Review
Fantasy Grade: C-
It's the dawn of a new era in Carolina. There's a new head coach in Frank Reich, and the Panthers mortgaged the franchise's future to move up and select Alabama quarterback Bryce Young first overall. Veteran Andy Dalton opened OTAs as the starter, but Reich admitted that he was impressed by what he's seen from Young so far. 'Bryce did not only a good job with himself. but really commanding the huddle, keeping everybody loose, keeping everybody dialed into what we were doing," Reich said. 'Just knowing the ins and outs of the offense, knowing where everybody is supposed to be, The good news for the Chicago Bears in 2022 was an electri-fying season from young quarterback Justin Fields. The bad news is that didn't prevent the Bears from having the worst record in the league. The Bears traded that first overall pick to Carolina for a package that included veteran wideout D.J. Moore, which only served to further demonstrate the Bears' prior* in 2023. Help Fields get better. Chris Towers of CBS Sports believes that's exactly what will happen in 2023. knowing the whole playback, just having great foot-work, knowing his reads. You could tell he knew what he was doing. He's just a great leader by the way he carries himself on arid off the field." Young's biggest struggle may be a lack of passing-game weapons. D.J. Moore is in Chicago now, leaving 32-year-old free agent signee Adam Thielen as the team's No. 1 receiver. Its a been a good long while (2018) since Thielen was a 1,000-yard receiver, but he told reporters he sees the move to Charlotte as a fresh start. "Yeah, it feels like a whole different world for me," he said. 'Super exciting. Kind of a breath of fresh air just to, ya know, I gotta go prove myself again. I gotta meet a lot of people and prove that I'm the player that I am. When I came here, I felt that the culture that was being built. I felt the excitement around this place. There's just something that felt right. And that's exciting. And I felt that every single day that I've been in here.' There is some other talent on the Panthers roster at receiver, whether DJ, Chark or Laviska Shenault, But Thielen is likely the most valuable of the lot, and even then, he's a late-round dart-throw in most fantasy leagues. Young should at least have some help in The backfield — Fresh off the first 1,000-yard season of his career and a top-10 fantasy finish, Miles Sanders signed with the Panthers in free agency. He told reporters that he expects to be a big part of the Carolina offense in 2023. "I'm looking forward to getting back into that three-down-type back (role)." Sanders said. 'Just flow with it and see what happens.' -The Bears are investing in Fields as their OB of the future, trading down from the No. 1 pick to acquire D.J. Moore, who immediately becomes the best wide receiver Fields has played with," he said. It's unfair to make the Josh Allen or Jalerr Hurts comps, but Moore could have a similar impact that Raton Diggs and A.J. Brown had for their quarterbacks, at least directionally, if not to quite the same extent. The thing with Fields is, he's such a dominant rusher, that if he just gets to, say 200 passing yards and 1.5 passing touchdowns per pose, you're probably looking at a top-5 OB." Moore's numbers tailed off in 2022, but phut° that he posted three straight 1,100-yard seasons with the Panthers, However, unless there's a major spike in passing volume, Robert Lorge of RotoBaller believes that Bears pass-catchers like Moore and tight end Cole Krnet could be risky moves. 'To make Moore's current cost of admission worth it, you have to be expecting a massive increase in the team's passing volume or a significant increase in Fields' passing efficiency,' he said. "Both of these seem far from guaranteed. Until Moon's price drops, fantasy managers would be best to let someone else draft Moore at his current asking price.' Unfortunately. there's not much more certainly in the Chicago backfield, either. When David Montgomery left for Detroit, it appeared that Khalil Herbert might finally be getting his chance to be a lead back — right up until the Bears signed D'Onte Foreman. After serving as Carolina's lead back after Christian McCaffrey was traded East year, Foreman told reporters that he's not interested in playing second-fiddle on his new team. "When I knew I had the opportunity to be the guy, lined to do it to the best of my ability," Foreman said. "I opened some eyes to show what I bring to the table. I want to build on that and continue to grow." There's not a ton on the depth chart at running back behind Sanders. If he truly does fall into a workhorse role on his new team, that volume should at least land Sanders in RB2 territory. And if the Carolina offense is better than expected, Sanders could be even more than that. | ||
