Current News Updates
8/31 Rookie WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba practiced for the second day since wrist surgery, and the team is hopeful of his availability for the Sept. 10 season opener. “He’s doing remarkably well,” coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday, via Brady Henderson of ESPN. “I saw him respond to the injury at the outset, and then I saw him respond to when they told him he’s going to have to get operated on, and so I’m not surprised at the attitude that he’s brought post-surgery. He’s out here working, catching balls, catching punts, doing everything. He ain’t worried about it. It could have gone a number of different ways. It’s gone the way of the competitor. He’s not going to be denied. He wants to play football.” Smith-Njigba, the 20th overall pick in April, broke a bone in his left wrist against the Cowboys on Aug. 19. He underwent surgery a week ago in Philadelphia. Smith-Njigba had his hand heavily wrapped during Wednesday’s practice, according to Henderson. “I think it’s a great statement about his competitiveness and his mentality,” Carroll said. “He’s not going to be held out. He’s going for it. Really, you couldn’t ask for more. You couldn’t ask for a better approach, and then his discipline about coming out and working and getting everything done. He hasn’t even flinched. Awesome.” Smith-Njigba is expected to be the team’s third receiver behind Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf, and Carroll said he’s “hoping” Smith-Njigba will be ready for Week 1 against the Rams. “I don’t know,” Carroll said. “We’ll see what happens. He looks great right now.”8/29 The Seahawks could have a key rookie on the field when Week 1 rolls around. Via Brady Henderson of ESPN.com, first-round receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba returned to the practice field on Tuesday, just days after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured wrist. “His left hand was heavily wrapped,” Henderson said, “but he seemed to be catching passes without much issue (save for one bobble in wet conditions).” Smith-Njigba could help to dramatically supercharge a corps of receivers that includes DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. The Seahawks host the Rams to start the regular season, in 12 days. After the injury happened, coach Pete Carroll said Smith-Njigba could miss 3-4 weeks in all. 8/28 According to Ian Rapoport, Seahawks WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who underwent surgery to repair a small broken bone in his wrist, is expected to begin the season on the active roster. There is no word yet on his availability for Week 1, but avoiding IR/designated to return is a sign he'll play soon. 8/26 As NFL.com's Brenna White noted, the Seahawks offense had a shaky start, but everything eventually settled for quarterback Drew Lock with a big-time play from an undrafted rookie wideout. It was third-and-three with less than four minutes to go in the second quarter, and Lock had all the time in the world as he launched a rocket to Jake Bobo, who picked up his speed to beat a defender and and made an wonderful 18-yard catch in the end zone. The UCLA product ended the day with two receptions for 27 yards and the score, which showed off his potential in the final dress rehearsal. Lock also demonstrated his own capabilities as the backup QB to Geno Smith, completing 16 of 25 passes for 150 yards and a TD. Bobo's impressive preseason could earn him a spot on Seattle’s 53-man roster. “He's done everything he's had a chance to do,” HC Pete Carroll said. “He's blocked well. He's played with terrific effort. He's a smart kid. He's made big plays. He's made routine plays. He's just come through with whatever we're asking him to do. ...” The Seahawks begin the regular season Sept. 10 by hosting the Los Angeles Rams. ... You can access complete stats for Saturday's Week 3 exhibition finale via our exclusive Fantasy BoxScore. 8/24 Rookie WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba underwent surgery this week to repair a wrist fracture. HC Pete Carroll announced that the surgery was successful. “I haven’t heard any word since the surgery other than what they initially said, that everything went great,” Carroll said, via John Boyle of the team website. “They showed us the pictures and all that kind of stuff, so we saw that. It’s an elaborate surgery for such a small crack, but it’s going to be so safe, so we’re really pleased with it, and so is he.” Carroll did not update the timeline he gave earlier this week, which was that the first-rounder is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. That puts Week 1 in jeopardy considering the season opener against the Rams is 17 days away. Smith-Njigba flew to Philadelphia on Tuesday to undergo surgery by a specialist. He fractured his wrist in Saturday’s game against the Cowboys when he was tackled near the goal line. The 20th overall pick made six receptions for 83 yards in two preseason games, including a 48-yard catch against Dallas. 8/22 Following up on the previous item. ... Jaxon Smith-Njigba's rookie season might not start on time. The Seahawks wide receiver is set to undergo wrist surgery for a slight fracture and could miss three to four weeks, HC coach Pete Carroll told reporters on Tuesday. Initial reports indicated that Smith-Njigba's injury would require surgery, but a recovery timeline was to be determined. Now, it's seems as though a return for the team's season opener Sept. 10 against the Los Angeles Rams is a longshot, and missing more than one game could be a possibility with that timetable. JSN will now have to complete another period of rest and recovery -- much like how he spent most of his final season at Ohio State due to a hamstring injury -- instead of finishing the ramp-up process for the 18-week regular season. On the bright side for Seattle, the Seahawks aren't putting a majority of their hopes on Smith-Njigba's shoulders. They have DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and an offensive cast filled with enough weapons to do the job without Smith-Njigba. It sounds as if it should still be little more than a temporary absence. For those who were waiting for Seattle's season opener against the Rams for their first look at Smith-Njigba in games that count, well, you just might have to wait a little bit longer. 8/22 NBC Sports’ Peter King said (via Rotoworld) that HC Pete Carroll is not concerned about Kenneth Walker III’s groin injury. King said Walker, who resumed practicing last week after sitting out with the groin issue, should be fine to open the season against the Rams. 8/22 Seahawks’ first-round pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba is undergoing wrist surgery today in Philadelphia, but still could have a chance to be ready for the start of the regular season, sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter. Surgery will determine how long he will miss. Smith-Njigba broke a bone in his wrist against the Cowboys Saturday night on a play in which he almost scored. ... Stay tuned. 8/20 According to the Associated Prss, Geno Smith looked sharp in his two drives, Drew Lock led Seattle to a pair of second-quarter touchdowns, and the Seahawks beat the Cowboys on Saturday night. Seattle (2-0) gave a number of its starters on both sides of the ball a little bit of playing time in the second week of the preseason. Smith had two drives behind his starting offensive line and the second possession ended in a 57-yard field goal from Jason Myers. Smith was 5 of 6 for 46 yards in his limited action. Lock took over in the second quarter and continued to show the Seahawks would be in good hands if they need their backup. Lock was 5 of 6 for 119 yards, including a 48-yard strike to first-rounder Jaxon Smith-Njigba that set up DeeJay Dallas’ 1-yard TD run. Smith-Njigba started against Dallas and caught three passes for 58 yards. Playing in a run-heavy offense behind DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, Smith-Njigba may have a hard time putting up the kind of production that would make him a sure-fire fantasy starter or a candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year. But ESPN.com's Brady Henderson believes the 20th overall pick looks like he can help Geno Smith and Seattle's offense in a big way, especially on third down. 8/17 When running back Kenneth Walker III injured his groin in a July 27 practice, HC Pete Carroll downplayed it as “minor.” It wasn’t days, though, that Walker needed for his return, but weeks. Walker is back, though. A day after returning to individual drills at practice, Walker had a full practice Thursday, Carroll said (via Profootballtalk.com). Walker is not expected to participate in the team’s second preseason game on Saturday night against the Cowboys. He finished second to Jets receiver Garrett Wilson in voting for offensive rookie of the year in 2022 after rushing for 1,050 yards and nine touchdowns. 8/15 Seattle's defense reminded us of last season's struggles in last Thursday's exhibition opener, getting gashed up the gut repeatedly. According to NFL.com, it's a sign the depth on D isn't up to snuff, particularly at linebacker, but given starters didn't play, and it's Aug. 10, freaking out about it seems premature. Instead, let's highlight the young players flashing potential. First-round wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba wasn't prolific (three catches, 25 yards), but his 15-yard catch over the middle showed how he could feast alongside DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. Running back Zach Charbonnet boasted a couple of angry runs, plowing over defenders, and flashed pass-catching ability. ... There's a long road ahead, but if Seattle gets production out of its rookies, it could be dangerous in a wide-open NFC. 8/12 According to Brady Henderson of ESPN, Seahawks RB Kenneth Walker III (Groin) has returned to practice. Walker has been out since the first day of training camp, per Henderson. 8/08 Tyler Lockett, while Seahawks receivers caught passes from the quarterbacks today, worked on the side catching passes from a Jugs machine. According to Tacoma News Tribune staffer Greg Bell, Lockett hasn’t participated fully with teammates the last three practices. Pete Carroll said the veteran was getting rest while dealing with some general tightness. 8/08 Geno Smith shocked the world and performed like a fantasy QB1 in at least 10 games en route to Comeback Player of the Year honors and his first Pro Bowl selection in 2022 at age 32. He not only replaced Russell Wilson, he broke the Seattle icon's single-season passing record (4,282) and nearly doubled his previous career total for TD passes while leading the NFL in completion percentage. The Seahawks rewarded him with a three-year, $75 million deal in March and set him up for more success by drafting star Ohio State WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the first round and UCLA RB Zach Charbonnet in the second. Seattle also showed confidence in him by not taking a QB with any of their 10 draft picks. "We're counting on him coming through and doing the things that he was able to do last year," head coach Pete Carroll said. With wideouts DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett slicing up secondaries, Smith is at least a high-ceiling fantasy backup and at best a late-round steal. ... On the injury front, both Kenneth Walker III (groin) and rookie Zach Charbonnet (shoulder) missed time to start camp; Charbonnet returned to work on 8/3 while Walker remains out. Carroll continues to downplay the issue, but it merits our attention going forward especially with rookie Kenny McIntosh likely out a couple weeks due a left knee sprain.

Team Review

Key Acquisitions: QB Drew Lock, TE Noah Fant, DT Shelby Harris, OLB Uchenna Nwosu Key Losses: QB Russell Wilson, LB Bobby Wagner, TE Gerald Everett, CB D.J. Reed The times they are-a-changing in the Pacific Northwest. Whether it's under center or in the offensive backfield, there are some massive changes coming in Seattle -- changes that make it difficult to peg the fantasy value of most of the people involved. The biggest is at quarterback, where (as things stand presently) either Geno Smith or Drew Lock will get the unenviable task of replacing Russell Wilson. Early in OTAs, offensive coordinator Shane Waldron told 93.3 KJR radio that Smith's knowledge of the team's offense affords him an early edge over Lock. Right now, Geno has done such a good job of carrying over [from 2021]. He already had a head start over Drew right there," Waldron said. "We have a long time to go. We are just in T-shirts and shorts right now, going against air. We have a long way to go to see where this competition goes." As odd as it feels to type, the best bet for the fantasy value of players like wide receivers Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf is for Lock to win this "battle." He's not especially accurate, but he has a much livelier arm than Smith. Still, while talking to reporters, Lockett warned not to give up on these new look Seahawks. "I'm excited," Lockett said, "I think that we have a great team at hand. I think that we're seeing it each and every day. We're understanding new schemes, new philosophies, new offense, new defense. I think that it's going to be a great season, honestly, I do." Fantasy managers appear to be buying what Lockett is selling, at least somewhat -- both Metcalf and Lockett are still being drafted inside WR2 according to early ADP data. Running back Rashaad Penny appeared to have his "lightbulb" moment last year -- Penny was an elite fantasy option down the stretch and a player who won quite a few folks' leagues. So what was his reward? The team used a second-round pick on Michigan State's Kenneth Walker, a punishing one-cut runner who would appear a near perfect fit for Seattle's run scheme. However, Derek Brown of Fantasy Pros cautions not to write off Penny just yet. "He only ran a route on 32.2 percent (per PFF) of Russell Wilson's dropbacks last year, so don't expect up from him in the passing game," he said. "His rushing prowess is legit, though. Penny could be stuck in a committee with Kenneth Walker, but don't rule out him running away with the job for 2022." The most likely outcome here is a committee, but if Penny or Walker does emerge as the clear-cut No. 1 back, that player could potentially have legitimate RB1 upside. | ||||
