9/01 According to ESPN's Dan Graziano, we shouldn't be surprised if tight end Darren Waller leads the team in catches. ... HC Brian Daboll remembers that it took a couple of years for the Bills to build a wide receiver corps around Josh Allen when Daboll was their offensive coordinator. The Giants have an intriguing wide receiver room, but no one in it has established himself as a true No. 1 target, and it's possible the team will still be looking for a WR1 next offseason. In the meantime, Waller is the guy who can best create mismatches in the middle of the field and get open for QB Daniel Jones. He had more than 1,000 yards in 2019 and 2020 before missing time in each of the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Jones has looked Waller's way often throughout the summer, and Graziano contends if Waller can put his injury issues from recent years behind him, he's the strongest candidate on the roster to emerge as the top receiver -- at least until Daboll finds whoever his Stefon Diggs will be in New York.8/29 A few of the Giants’ moves to get to 53 players leaked out over the course of the day, but they announced their full list of transactions shortly after the deadline to set their initial regular season roster. As Profootballtalk.com notes, wide receiver Cole Beasley was one of the players who failed to make the cut. He joined David Sills and Jamison Crowder as the veteran receivers cut loose by the Giants, but there has been some chatter about Beasley making a return once the Giants sort out some of their other roster quandaries. Tight end Tommy Sweeney was placed on the non-football illness list after experiencing what the team called a “medical event” in practice last week. The Giants also waived or released quarterback Tommy DeVito; running back Jashaun Corbin; wide receiver Kalil Pimpleton; tight end Ryan Jones; offensive linemen Tyre Phillips and Sean Harlow; defensive tackles Ryder Anderson and Kobe Smith; defensive end Habakkuk Baldonado; linebackers Darrian Beavers, Tomon Fox, Ray Wilborn, Dyontae Johnson, and Oshane Ximines; cornerbacks Gemon Green and Amani Oruwariye; safety Alex Cook; and long snapper Cameron Lyons. ... Find the full list of announced moves on our NFL Roster Cuts page. 8/29 According to Ian Rapoport, the Giants will activate WR Wan'Dale Robinson off the PUP list. He’ll be on the active roster when the season begins. Robinson has been recovering from a torn ACL. Additionally, the Giants have released WR Jamison Crowder. 8/28 As NFL.com reported it, "The acrimonious offseason contract kerfuffle with the New York Giants hasn't soured Saquon Barkley from hoping to remain a Big Blue staple for his career. ..." Asked Sunday by Paul Schwartz of the New York Post if he still wanted to be a Giant for life, Barkley responded: "Oh, yeah. I don't think that really changed. They know how I feel. I'm not really too focused on that right now." Long-term contract talks between Barkley and the Giants left the running back openly frustrated at certain points during the process. After sides couldn’t agree to a multi-year contract before the July 17 deadline, Barkley signed a one-year solution, with incentives potentially pushing his total pay to $11 million before training camp. Now, Barkley isn't sweating the situation. "Once I made the decision I was going to show up and I was going to be there and do my job, you got to put all that aside," Barkley said. "Got to be mature about it." Added Barkley: "We made a decision; you got to put it to the side; you got a job to take care of. I'm here, and I'm ready for the season. ..." It marked the first time Barkley had spoken publicly since July 27 -- the second day of training camp -- because he wanted to avoid persistent questions about his future. "I just felt the questions would continue to be about the tag or the money situation," Barkley said. "It's in the past. I can't control that. I know I came out and tweeted, 'It is what it is,' and that's what I truly felt at the moment. ..." With the one-year solution in place, how Barkley plays in his second season under head coach Brian Daboll will color where contract negotiations pick up once the season ends. With another franchise tag option at the team's disposal, we could be doing the Barkley Tag dance once again during the 2024 offseason. 8/27 James Robinson, a running back who made a splash as an undrafted rookie with the Jaguars in 2020, was cut by the Giants this morning, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. The release comes despite Robinson playing well in Saturday’s preseason finale, carrying 10 times for 55 yards. Robinson has now been cut twice this offseason. The Patriots signed him in March and then cut him in June. The Giants are also releasing WR Jaydon Mickens. 8/26 Tommy DeVito, the third-stringer behind starter Daniel Jones and backup Tyrod Taylor, redeemed himself for an early pick-6 by leading the Giants on an impressive drive two series later in Saturday night's loss to the Jets. Jashaun Corbin had a 1-yard TD run with 8:27 left in the opening half to cut the Giants' deficit to 14-7. DeVito and the Giants converted four third-down plays on the drive that went 81 yards on 14 plays over 6:25. DeVito, an undrafted rookie from Illinois, finished 19 of 29 for 210 yards, including a late 30-yard TD pass to David Sills. ... Graham Gano kicked field goals of 57, 40 and 56 yards for the Giants, making him 6 for 6 on goal attempts in the preseason — each from 40 or more yards. ... Next up, the Giants host Dak Prescott and Dallas in a Sunday night game on Sept. 10. ... You can access complete stats for Saturday's Week 3 exhibition finale via our exclusive Fantasy BoxScore. 8/24 Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Cardinals have agreed to trade 2020 first-round pick Isaiah Simmons to the Giants. The Giants will be sending a 2024 seventh-round pick back to Arizona in exchange for Simmons. Simmons was a star as a versatile piece of the Clemson defense while in college and the Cardinals made him the eighth overall pick as a result. He saw time as an off-ball linebacker, a pass rusher, a safety, and a slot corner while in college and he was never able to find a comfortable and productive fit once he advanced to the NFL level. It’s unclear what the Giants have planned for Simmons, but they get a chance to see if a change of scenery leads to better results from a player who many were high on when he came into the league. 8/24 The Giants have still not explained exactly why TE Tommy Sweeney had to be carted off the practice field yesterday, but he seems to be better today. Sweeney had what the Giants have called a “medical event,” but today head coach Brian Daboll said that Sweeney is back at the team facility, walking around and looking good. Daboll declined to go into specifics about what kind of “medical event” Sweeney experienced and wouldn’t say if Sweeney had to be taken to a hospital. After playing the last four years in Buffalo, Sweeney signed with the Giants in March. 8/22 Retired tight end Rob Gronkowski recently said that if there’s one coach who could convince him to un-retire, it would be Giants head coach Brian Daboll. But Daboll downplayed any talk that Gronkowski might actually come back and play for the Giants. Daboll was asked about Gronkowski’s comments and said the two have been close since Daboll’s stint as the Patriots’ tight ends coach from 2013 to 2016. But Daboll also said not to read much into anything Gronkowski says about playing again. “I’m close with Rob,” Daboll said. “I have a lot of respect, admiration. I coached him for four years. He’s a good friend. We’ve talked — I’m not saying we’ve talked about that but he’s a close friend. When you coach someone for four years and he’s a very productive player for you and really a good person — we’re from the same town. I wouldn’t read too much into that. ...” The 34-year-old Gronkowski first announced his retirement in 2019, when he was just 29 years old. After sitting out the 2019 season, he un-retired in 2020 and the Patriots traded him to the Buccaneers. Gronkowski played two years in Tampa but retired again in 2022 and did not play last season. Gronkowski had played out his contract with the Buccaneers at the time he retired, meaning that if he un-retires, he’s a free agent who can sign with any team. That team could be the Giants, but the more likely scenario is that Gronkowski played his last NFL game in the Buccaneers’ playoff loss in January of 2022. 8/19 As NFL.com framed it, "Daniel Jones to Darren Waller. Get used to hearing that. ..." For those of the mind that Waller left his best seasons in Las Vegas, his new quarterback Daniel Jones appears set on proving you wrong. In Jones' and Waller's first preseason showing together, the QB went to his shiny new tight end immediately against the Panthers. And then went to him again and again. Jones targeted Waller on the first three plays from scrimmage on Friday night before finding another new addition, wide receiver Parris Campbell?, for 13 yards. Jones looked excellent in his one and only series, hitting on 8 of 9 passes (the only miss a Waller drop) for 89 yards, the final four of those yards coming on a touchdown to Daniel Bellinger in which Waller drew double coverage. Waller had three grabs for 30 yards (Campbell had two receptions for 18 yards). Jones looked sharp and happy to have a host of new options. Meanwhile, Waller (who lined up wide, in the slot and tight) looked refreshed, and in a preseason sampling flashed his 2019-2020 form. Obviously, there's the obligatory caveat that this is just the preseason, but a quick Jones-Waller chemistry seems undeniable. 8/16 Wide receiver Cole Beasley is dealing with a leg injury. Head coach Brian Daboll confirmed today (via Profootballtalk.com) that Beasley is missing his second consecutive practice with the injury. As PFT suggests, Beasley got a much bigger workload than you’d expect for a 34-year-old veteran in the Giants’ preseason opener, catching four passes in the first quarter. That may indicate that the Giants want to see Beasley earn a roster spot. That’s a hard thing to do while he’s injured. The Giants have a crowded wide receiver room, with Isaiah Hodgins, Darius Slayton, Parris Campbell, Jalin Hyatt, Sterling Shepard and Wan’Dale Robinson all ahead of Beasley on the depth chart. 8/08 According to the Athletic’s Charlotte Carroll, Parris Campbell is “poised to earn plenty of snaps — and targets — as the Giants’ starting slot receiver. ...” As Rotowold.com points out, Campbell, a second-round pick for the Colts who has battled injuries during his time as a pro, has had a strong offseason for the Giants and was taking snaps at running back during OTAs. ... Also of interest: Carroll reports that rookie WR Jalin Hyatt has been a standout performer early in training camp. As Carroll put it, Hyatt’s speed “is just impressive to watch up close.; Hyatt has flashed early in training camp and has already received multiple reps with the first-team offense. 8/08 With Saquon Barkley agreeing to terms on a slightly-upgraded (from the franchise tag) contract, the attention turns to the receiving corps. In particular, it turns to newly-acquired tight end Darren Waller. When healthy Waller has been one of the best tight ends in the NFL. He posted back-to-back 1,100-yard seasons in 2019 and 2020. That's one more 1,000-yard season than all the other tight ends in Giants history combined. And while injuries cost the 30-year-old 13 games over the last two seasons, memories of those monster campaigns have been sufficient to keep Waller inside the top-10 at his position. This move, to an offense still in search of a true WR1, is unlikely to change that view, especially with Waller drawing rave reviews early in camp. It will, however, add more positive energy to Daniel Jones, Barkley and a Giants offense that's on the rise under Brian Daboll. The next step? Sort out the wide receiving corps, which seems loaded with slot receivers. In terms of health, Shepard and Jamison Crowder were activated from the PUP list last week. Shepard tore his ACL early last season and Crowder was on the non-football injury list. ... One last item here: Waller dislocated a finger in practice on 8/5; the injury isn't a concern going forward.

Fantasy Grade: C
The Giants made the postseason and even won a playoff game last year, but it was as much in spite of New York's mediocre offense as because of it. That offense added one notable piece in the passing game this season, NA it's an offense that is (on paper) largely unchanged in 2023. That new piece in the passing game is veteran tight end Darren Waller, who came over in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. While on a podcast appearance. Rob Gronkowski (who knows a thing or two about the position) said that he expects Waller to bounce back in a big way with Big Blue in 2023. "(Brian Daboll) loves to use tight ends," Gronkowski said. "I say this: Watch Dann Wailer have a year this year. His going to have a year. He's going to be up there this yea. Daboll is going to find a way to use him and utilize his skillset like no other. He's going to be all over the field. This year I believe he's going to come back and he's going to be a Pro Bowl-caliber type player" The Giants also brought in wide receiver Parris Campbell from the Indianapolis Colts and drafted Tennessee speed-ster Jelin Hyatt. But whether it's Campbell, Hyatt, Isaiah Hodgins or Darius Slayton, New York's wideouts are speculative fantasy options at best. At any rate, it wasn't really throwing the ball that made Daniel Jones fantasy-relevant in 2022 anyway — Jones rode the fifth-most rushing yards among quarterbacks to a surprising top-12 finish, and Peter Vitella of GMen-HQ thinks that the new additions in New York can only help Jones this year. "New York still might riot have the best wide receivers room in football, but they have depth, and they have tal-ent," he said. 'Jones has to love all the speed they have added, too. He will be a big fan of his new, big tight end and of course the additions to the offensive line. Most importantly, it's the same offense again for Jones. The second year of Jones under Daboll and offensive coordi-nator Mike Kafka should be extremely exciting." Daniel Jones got a new contract this year, but Saquon Barkley was slapped with the franchise tag. However, as Colin Gorini wrote for Rotoballer, there's no question who the most valuable fantasy asset in New York is. "Following a top-5 campaign, Barkley is certain to soar up draft boards this offseason," he said. 'The Giants were the fourth-youngest team this past year and have a bright future under Brian Daboll. Saquon handled the ball over 350 times this year, hopefully a sign that his injury woes are past him. Few can match his game-breaking upside." | |||||
