Current News Updates
8/31 QB Deshaun Watson (illness) returned to practice Wednesday, per HC Kevin Stefanski.8/28 Cleveland has addressed its kicker problem. After a rough preseason from 2022 fourth-round pick Cade York, the Browns have acquired Dustin Hopkins from the Chargers, according to multiple reports. Cleveland will send L.A. a 2025 seventh-round pick to complete the trade. York will be waived, per multiple reports, making Hopkins the team’s kicker immediately. Hopkins lost Los Angeles’ kicking job to Cameron Dicker. But Hopkins was 2-of-2 on field goals and 3-of-3 on extra points during the preseason. After joining the Chargers in 2021, Hopkins kept the job entering 2022 but suffered a hamstring injury in October. He missed the rest of the season. Before the injury, Hopkins was 9-of-10 on field goals, 12-of-12 on extra points, and sent 90 percent of his kickoffs for touchbacks. Hopkins, 32, was Washington’s kicker from 2015-2021. He’s hit 85 percent of his career field goals and 94 percent of his extra points. York connected on a 58-yard field goal to win Cleveland’s season-opener against Carolina last year. But he finished the season just 24-of-32 on his field goals and missed a pair of extra points. As Profootballtalk.com notes, while York has looked good in practice by all accounts, he was just 4-of-8 on his field goals this preseason — and those are the ones that counted. He also missed an extra point during Saturday’s preseason finale against the Chiefs that was wiped out by a penalty. 8/28 For the second consecutive preseason game, Browns kicker Cade York missed a potential game-winning field goal attempt in the exhibition finale. This one was blocked, but York said he didn’t want any excuses and just wants to make his kicks. “To be honest, people gave me pats on the back and crap like that, but I hate pity,” York said. “Pity pisses me off. I want to be a weapon. I know how good I am. That’s been the most frustrating thing the last month, struggling with that. So, the real games starts soon. Just trying to take a running start into the season and just start putting them through all the time.” York had been hit on his follow-through on an extra point earlier in the game and injured his shin, but he said it was a minor injury and didn’t affect his kicking the rest of the day. “No, it ended up being fine,” York said. “I got rolled up on. I think I was just scared when it happened more than how bad it really hurt. Ended up being lucky that it didn’t get worse, but it was all good. I ended up just kicking through it. ...” HC Kevin Stefanski declined to answer a question about whether York’s roster spot is in jeopardy. He’s the only kicker on the Browns’ roster, but it’s possible that another kicker could be coming to Cleveland in the coming days. 8/27 WR Marquise Goodwin (blood clots) is coming off of NFI and will begin to practice. That's good news since and MRI has confirmed WR/KR Jakeem Grant is out for the year with a ruptured patellar tendon. 8/27 The Patriots have traded RB Pierre Strong Jr. to the Browns in exchange for OT Tyrone Wheatley Jr., sources tell NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Jerome Ford, the top backup to Nick Chubb, has been dealing with a hamstring injury that has his Week 1 status in question. 8/26 Deshaun Watson acknowledged there is plenty to fix with about two weeks left before the start of the season, but the Browns quarterback also has seen some progress and believes things are trending in the right direction. He might not have thought the same way after his first two drives in Saturday's win over the Chiefts. ... Watson was part of a fumbled handoff that ended one drive against Kansas City, then threw two incompletions while going three-and-out on the next. But the $230 million quarterback eventually settled down, leading Cleveland to touchdowns on his next two drives, before the Chiefs rallied behind a host of backups for a 33-32 victory in their preseason finale. “It was good for us to be able to deal with some adversity early on," said Watson. “We made some plays overall, and we kind of moved the ball. We had guys touch the ball and things like that. ..." Watson played sparingly in the Browns' first three preseason games, so HC Kevin Stefanski gave him the entire first quarter against Kansas City (2-1). Watson's 96 yards passing (5 of 10) on the day was largely gained from a 53-yard connection to Amari Cooper on a broken play and he was taken out after a quarter of play. Cade York (right shin) ended up returning to the game -- nailing two PATs and a field goal before being blocked on a potential game-winning kick -- but Jakeem Grant's knee injury appeared to be serious and presents a glaring need for Cleveland ahead of their Week 1 tilt against AFC North rival Cincinnati on Sept. 10 with its primary kick and punt returner likely gone. ... You can access complete stats for Saturday's Week 3 exhibition finale via our exclusive Fantasy BoxScore. 8/26 According to Cleveland Plain Dealer staffer Mary Kay Cabot, Jakeem Grant has suffered a possible broken patella in his knee. They're hoping it's not also torn. An MRI on Sunday will confirm that. If it's just broken, it wouldn't nessarily be season-ending. 8/26 WR Jakeem Grant was carted off during today's game against the Chiefs with an air cast over his right leg. 8/24 After announcing they waived Kellen Mond earlier today, the Browns have now pulled back that move and plan to keep him on the roster through the preseason, a source tells ESPN's Adam Schefter. Trading Josh Dobbs changed things and Mond should play this week. 8/24 The Browns made a move earlier on Wednesday that signaled their intentions with their quarterbacks when they waived Kellen Mond. In his Thursday press conference, HC Kevin Stefanski confirmed Josh Dobbs will be the team’s backup quarterback behind Deshaun Watson with rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson serving as the No. 3. That just changed as the Browns traded Dobbs to the Cardinals leaving Watson and Thompson-Robinson as the only QBs on the roster. Stefanski may have foreshadowed this with comments after Monday was released. “Just speaking to DTR, he’s coming along," the coach said. "He’s making great strides. We’re excited about his future. And just the focus for him and all our guys is to continue to work. Going into Week 1, you look at your depth chart and you just want guys to continue to grow and get better because as you all know, there’s times that guys are unavailable due to injury or otherwise So, it is a constant striving to get better.” Seems like they feel that DTR has gotten better. 8/24 According to Brad Stainbrook, the Browns have waived QB Kellen Mond. 8/24 Deshaun Watson says he has no issue with no longer being ranked among the NFL's top passers heading into the season. "You can't focus on that because that ranking is always changing," Watson said. "And for me, I missed two years of football, so I shouldn't be in those rankings, to be honest. If you're asking me, I haven't played ball, I haven't played enough football the last few years to even be up there. So I got to go out there and prove and show what I got to do to get back in those conversations." Watson is entering his first full season as Cleveland's starting quarterback. He was limited to six games because of a suspension in his first season with the Browns and it was his first game action for any team since the 2020 season, so it was no surprise that the offense never got into sync with Watson on the field. On Wednesday, Watson said that more time with head coach Kevin Stefanski and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt has allowed him to take more ownership of what the team is doing offensively. “AVP and Kevin gave me the keys and they’re letting me control a lot of things that we do on the field. ... That comes over time,” Watson said, via Cleveland.com. “Me understanding this offense. Understanding what they want to do and what schemes we want to do in the run game and the passing game. Just being able to build that trust, build that ownership up, taking control of the offense and being on the field and being that coach and player at the same time. ...” Watson led the NFL in passing yards in 2020 and was generally considered to be among the top quarterbacks in the league. But Watson struggled after his return from last year's suspension. In six games, he posted a QBR of 38.3; only Russell Wilson, Mac Jones, Davis Mills, Carson Wentz and Baker Mayfield had worse QBRs among starting quarterbacks. Jacoby Brissett, Cleveland's backup who filled in for Watson last year, had a QBR of 60.0 over 11 games. The Browns are clearly banking on a rebound. 8/23 As NFL.com framed it: "Nick Chubb's place in Cleveland has been that of a load-bearing, tackle-breaking cornerstone. Most of his work has been done on the ground. In 2023, though, that might expand to the air. ..." In fact, Chubb is seeing more activity in Cleveland's passing game during training camp and the preseason. With a full camp with Deshaun Watson working to their advantage, the Browns hope they can find new ways to attack defenses from the start of the season. "I think it will," Chubb said when asked how his involvement in the passing game might open up Cleveland's offense. "Not knowing what we're going to do if I'm in the game. Last year I was just mostly (playing) first, second down, so I kind of gave them an idea of what we're going to do. But hopefully this year will be different with me doing more things." With Kareem Hunt now gone and youngster Jerome Ford still working his way back from injury, the Browns will likely need Chubb to do more. He's embracing the challenge, while downplaying the added responsibility. ... Chubb has been a flashpoint of debate in Cleveland regarding Kevin Stefanski's play-calling decisions in the last year. When Stefanski called 20 or more runs for Chubb, the Browns went 5-1. In games in which he saw less than 20 carries, Cleveland finished just 2-9. While it might seem as simple as handing the ball to Chubb more, defenses caught up to this advantage quite quickly. And because the Browns didn't use Chubb as a pass catcher, when he was on the field, he largely occupied one of two roles: ball-carrier or pass blocker. Adding Chubb into the passing game should, as he explained, make Cleveland less predictable. This, plus the full availability of Watson from Week 1 onward, should help Cleveland improve upon its 14th-ranked standing last season, which included a 22nd-place finish in passing. 8/22 Kevin Stefanski said RB Jerome Ford (hamstring) won’t practice this week. Ford is making progress and the hope is he’ll be ready for the opener Sept. 10. 8/20 HC Kevin Stefanski provided a pair of positive injury updates ahead of Sunday’s practice. Stefanski said that right tackle Jack Conklin has been cleared to return to practice. Conklin went into the concussion protocol after leaving Monday’s joint practice with the Eagles. WR Elijah Moore returned to practice earlier this week and Stefanski said that he will move up to full participation. He injured his ribs during the team’s second preseason game and was limited in practice last week. Stefanski said that the plan for this week is for all of the team’s starters to play in their final preseason game against the Chiefs, so Conklin and Moore should be in the lineup if all goes well for them in practice. 8/18 Deshaun Watson did not play in the Browns’ preseason game against the Eagles on Thursday night. But the quarterback hopes to play at least a quarter in the preseason finale against the Chiefs on Aug. 26. “I would love to be out there,” Watson told Aditi Kinkhabwala on the News5 broadcast of the game, via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com. “I’m not sure how much exactly because I know Kevin [Stefanski] doesn’t want us to play the whole game, but get a little rhythm going for maybe a quarter against the Super Bowl champs and just to have that test I think would be fun. ...” Watson did not play in the Hall of Fame Game but played 12 snaps in one series last week against the Commanders. He completed all three attempts for 12 yards and ran for 20 yards on three rushes as the Browns went 67 yards to the Washington 1-yard line but failed to punch it in. Rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson started Thursday night against the Eagles and again showed he belonged. He completed 13 of 25 passes for 164 yards in the first half. He also ran for 18 yards on four carries. Kellen Mond is playing the second half. 8/18 HC Kevin Stefanski reiterated that Cade York remains the team's kicker despite a shaky preseason. ... York missed a game-winning try wide right from 47 yards during Thursday's preseason game in Philadelphia. An Eagles penalty, however, gave York another chance. But he then missed a 41-yard try wide left. York did make three field goals before that. The game ended in an 18-18 tie. "Cade's our kicker," said Stefanski, who noted the team would not be bringing another kicker into training camp for now. "We support him. We have a ton of confidence in him. That's really as simple as that." York is entering his second season with the Browns. He was a fourth-round pick out of LSU last year. Last week, York misfired on a 46-yard field goal try in Cleveland's preseason game against Washington. "Now's the time to work on our craft," Stefanski said. "Kickers want to make every kick. We want Cade to make every kick. You just got to continue to work through it. ... The kid works very hard. He'll continue to do that." 8/18 As NFL.com's Grant Gordon framed it, "Though the numbers didn’t glisten as they have in two previous outings," rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson’s impressive preseason carried on Thursday in Philadelphia. Staring down a deep and dominant Eagles defensive front, DTR had some happy feet here and there, but still made smart decisions and accurate throws. He displayed his scrambling prowess once more and captained Cleveland to a pair of field-goal drives in the first half. After 30 minutes of work, DTR finished the night 13 of 25 for 164 yards, highlighted by a pair of hookups with longtime friend Cedric Tillman, with another 18 on the ground via four carries. His stat line wasn’t as sexy as his previous two, but in three games in 14 days, Thompson-Robinson (30 of 46 for 348 yards, 13 carries for 65 yards in three tilts) has shown he can play -- and do so in exciting fashion. Deshaun Watson and Josh Dobbs are cemented at No. 1 and 2 on the QB depth chart, but DTR should’ve locked down the No. 3 spot ahead of Kellen Mond. 8/17 The Athletic’s Zac Jackson reports (via Rotoworld) the Browns’ passing game has been “completely unimpressive” thus far in training camp. ... As Jackson notes in his article, “Anything that involves Deshaun Watson remaining in the pocket has been an adventure, and not since early in camp have we seen a string of consecutive completions in any 11-on-11 period.” Jackson goes on to highlight an overall lack of consistency and pass attempts of “more than 10 yards downfield” as reasons the Browns of underwhelmed through the air thus far. As Rotoworld suggests, with a little more than three weeks to go until the regular season, the Browns have time to get things straightened out. Some of the camp struggles could be due to Amari Cooper practicing on a limited basis and Elijah Moore missing a few days recovering from a rib injury, but this all sounds mildly concerning. Watson underwhelmed in an abbreviated 2022 season after returning from suspension, but there are few acceptable excuses for any struggles this season. He’s currently going as a low-end QB1 in drafts, while Cooper is being drafted as a mid-WR2. Both run the risk of being fantasy busts if these camp struggles carry into the regular season. 8/15 According to NFL.com, WR Elijah Moore (ribs) will participate in individual drills on Tuesday, head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters. 8/12 According to Pro Football Talk, Browns WR Elijah Moore is considered day-to-day with a ribs injury. Moore was injured in Friday night's preseason game. The injury does not appear to be serious. 8/11 WR Elijah Moore, who suffered a rib injury in the first quarter of Friday's preseason game against the Commanders, had his X-rays come back negative, the team announced. 8/09 According to NFL.com, QB Deshaun Watson said he will start Cleveland's preseason opener against the Commanders on Friday. 8/08 According to ESPN.com's Jake Trotter, the Browns have a clear-cut starting receiving trio in Amari Cooper, Donovan Peoples-Jones and Elijah Moore. But after them, the competition for playing time is wide open, especially with veteran Marquise Goodwin having a blood clot issue. As the Browns move to a more wide-open scheme around QB Deshaun Watson, depth WR play will be paramount. Rookie Cedric Tillman, Jakeem Grant Sr. (coming back from an Achilles injury), David Bell, Anthony Schwartz and Jaelon Darden are among those vying for spots in the rotation. 8/08 Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports that Jerome Ford is set to miss time with a hamstring injury. Ford was injured during Monday’s practice and there’s no firm idea of when he might be well enough to return to action. With Kareem Hunt no longer on the roster — he’s expected to sign with the Saints Tuesday — and no clear No. 2 back behind Nick Chubb, Ford has been in the mix to fill that complementary role. Demetric Felton, John Kelly and Hassan Hall are the other backs on the Cleveland roster. An addition to the backfield could be coming. 8/08 Running back Nick Chubb got a veteran days off on Sunday (8/6), but before practice, RB coach Stump Mitchell hinted that Chubb could be on the field on third down more often than he has in the past while splitting time with Kareem Hunt. That could lead to more pass-catching opportunities for the All-Pro. As ESPN.com's Jake Trotter reminded readers, Chubb's season-high for receptions is 36 coming in 2019. Based on the way the Browns could be looking to use Chubb in a more pass-heavy scheme, Chubb could be primed to break that mark. Said Mitchell: "He's had an opportunity to run more of those routes. He just was not that guy (previously) unless he had to be." 08/08 According to NFL.com's Nick Shook, Cleveland might have a kicker problem. Cade York hasn't exactly given folks a reason to feel highly confident about his standing as the Browns' kicker of the future this year, and his first kick of the preseason didn't help. In last Thursday's Hall of Fame game against the Jets, York trotted onto the field after Cleveland's initial drive stalled, and instead of converting the 49-yard attempt, he pushed it wide right. York was fine from there, converting all three extra-point attempts, but they weren't without a bit of worry. Cleveland lost a game last year (coincidentally against these same Jets) because York missed a late PAT, and he wasn't all that consistent in his rookie season. He'll need to be better when given additional opportunities this preseason in order to assuage concerns about his reliability -- and to avoid prompting the Browns to explore other options. 8/08 A huge role exists for second-year running back Jerome Ford after the Cleveland Browns let Kareem Hunt walk and did not sign or draft another ball carrier outside of undrafted free agent Hassan Hall. However, Ford may now have to fight back an injury as he limped off Monday’s (8/7) training camp practice. It's reportedly a hamstring issue and it may now look like the Browns will have to delve into the free agency waters at the running back position if this injury to Ford turns out to linger. Look for John Kelly Jr., Demetric Felton, and Hassan Hall to continue to get the bulk of the carries this preseason. 08/08 According to NFL.com's Nick Shook, the Browns' backup quarterback situation is getting interesting. Cleveland chose to split the Hall of Fame Game in half, with Kellen Mond getting the first half, and fifth-round pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson replacing him for the final two quarters. Mond's first half had a few nice surprises, including a couple of connections with third-round pick Cedric Tillman (who showed plenty of promise in a game played largely against backups), but overall, it was underwhelming and justified why Mond has drifted into irrelevance. Thompson-Robinson, however, was anything but boring. The UCLA product entered the game and transformed the Browns from an offense that couldn't overcome its own mistakes, to one that relied on the quarterback to extend drives. He completed 3 of his 5 passes for 31 yards, gained another 30 with his legs, picked up seven first downs and even threw a key block on Demetric Felton's 16-yard touchdown run (in what was a beautiful example of former Bruins teamwork). Thompson-Robinson's impressive night didn't end there, either, as he ripped a rocket of a touchdown pass to Austin Watkins down the seam for a 22-yard score, giving the Browns a lead they wouldn't relinquish. If we're basing the final call between Mond and Thompson-Robinson solely on the Hall of Fame Game, the latter wins it by a wide margin. DTR brings juice and improvisational skills that Mond simply doesn't have, and he took the Browns from a sleepy, listless unit to one that marched down the field for two touchdowns with relative ease. We'll see if he can keep it up and earn a roster spot. 8/08 Deshaun Watson's return after a 700-day layoff last season went about as expected -- occasional bursts of brilliance from the three-time Pro Bowler plus some easy misses and timing problems, all of it covered in a layer of rust. Among QBs who attempted at least 150 passes, his 58.2 completion percentage ranked 36th. He didn't get on the same page with star WR Amari Cooper until the Week 17 win at Washington with two TD hookups, and he only rushed for more than 33 yards in one of his six starts. "Last year it was just a whirlwind, but it was a good learning lesson for myself and a chance for me to be able to grow," Watson said. "Coming in this year, I'm ahead of the game from where I was previously." The Browns added disgruntled Jets WR Elijah Moore and used their first pick (74th) in the 2023 draft on Tennessee WR Cedric Tillman, and TE David Njoku is coming off his best season. ... Amari Cooper began practicing shortly after camp opened. The veteran wideout underwent core muscle surgery shortly after the season. He told reporters he was not feeling any ill effects from the procedure, which explains why he was not placed on the physically unable to perform list. He was able to get on the field at the tail end of the team’s offseason program.

Team Review
Fantasy Grade: B
To say that the 2022 season was tumultuous in Cleveland is an understatement the trade and $230 million fully guaranteed contract given to Deshaun Watson will (for bet-ter or worse) define The team for years to come. Now the question is where the Browns go from here. Watson's 2022 was an uneven mess alter he returned from an 11-game personal conduct suspension, but he told reporters that he ready to show that he can still be the quarterback who ranked fourth in fantasy points back in 2020. "I know who I am, this organization knows who I am and the guys that I play with know who I am," Watson said. "Everyone has their own opinions of what they want to say or how they want to (judge) last year. At the and of the day, I have an opportunity to go out there and prove what I need to prove in 2023. That's what I'm focused on. I'm not focused on what anybody else has to say." There are weapons available to Watson that could por-tend a bounceback season. Amari Cooper excelled in his first season with the Browns last year, ranking 10th in PPR points among wide receivers. Tight end David Njoku also quietly put together a top-10 fantasy season in 2022. The Browns possess one of the best offensive lines in the league. The Browns also added a weapon in the passing game this spring, acquiring wide receiver Elijah Moore in a trade with the Jets. Moore flashed at times before falling out of favor in New York, and Joseph Barbati of RotoBaller sees real value resent with the young wideout. "Moore is certainly worth a flier in the double-digit rounds with at least high-end WR3 upside, a forecast only tem-pered by the nature of a run-first offense,- he said. "It's hard to not to be above consensus on his depressed price tag, as Moore is a gifted receiver who flashed those skills the last time he wasn't playing through chemistry issues." Of course, the real story in Cleveland is a ground game that ranked sixth in the league last year, and the engine that drives that ground game is Nick Chubb. The 2022 season was the best of Chubb's career — he eclipsed 1,500 yards on the ground for the first time and averaged five yards a carry for the fifth time in as many years. Chubb was sixth in PPR points among running backs in 2022, but his lack of passing game usage has led to him being a little overlooked in some drafts. But with Kareem Hunt gone, Chubb could see a career-high in touches — and potentially the best fantasy season of his career. | |||||||
